Clem Miller Environmental Education
Center, Point Reyes, is a low-cost environmental education program which
provides training and facilities for teachers looking to bring environmental
education into their curriculum. In our program the teachers are the ones who
do the actual environmental education, unlike other programs that have a staff
of naturalists to take the children out on hikes. Teachers do the teaching themselves,
enabling a greater connection to the classroom and both preparatory and follow-up
work before and after their visit.
Our first workshop is a free event,
entitled "Education
Center Orientation & Tour," is happening on Saturday November
6th, 2004 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and is an introduction to our Clem Miller
Environmental Education Center for teachers who are interested in bringing their
students to the center. This is a recommended precursor to our "Wild
in the Wilderness" training in the spring. At the Orientation teachers
will learn how to plan a 3 or 5 day residential program at our Education Center,
and will see demonstrations of environmental education activities, learn about
the resources that are offered to them through our program and through the national
park, and will tour the buildings and grounds. Reservations are required (415)
663-1224. A link for full information for the Orientation is as follows: http://www.ptreyes.org/clem/2004

Our second workshop, entitled "Wild
in the Wilderness: Adventures in Environmental Education," is a weekend
workshop taking place March 12-13th, 2005. This
workshop is a required one for teachers who are going to bring their students
to the Education Center. There is a cost of $80 for teachers from a school that
is new to our program, and is free for teachers whose school already comes to
the ed. center. At this training teachers will participate in hands-on activities,
and will learn how to adapt these activities to their class and to the trails
and teaching spots around the ed. center, as well as get tips on how to plan
a successful visit. Reservations are required (415) 663-1224. A link for full
information for this training is as follows: http://www.ptreyes.org/clem/wild
