EE Professionals Jack Shu and Sandi Funke will begin offering tailored workshops for California Environmental Education organizations, based on the new EE diversity training module "What's Fair got to do with it?" as part of their Diversity in Environmental Education Workshop Series.
The workshops, offered by Shu and Funke, allow participants to uncover the deeper issues in creating more diverse and culturally competent environmental education without pointing fingers or laying blame. Participants will uncover solutions they can apply to their own practice.
"We've all been looking forward to the cases workshops. As a diverse state, we in California are anxious to learn about new ways to become more culturally competent. I couldn't pick two better folks to bring us these trainings," explained Kay Antunez, Project Learning Tree manager for California.
The training module employed by Shu and Funke was developed by WestEd Education Laboratories and has been extensively field tested throughout the country. Similar trainings using these cases have been delivered to numerous organizations including the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Support for the development of the "What's Fair got to do with it?" training module was provided by the North American Association for Environmental Education and the Environmental Education Training and Partnership grant.
Of the fifteen facilitators trained nationally to deliver diversity workshops and facilitate the cases, California's Shu and Funke are excited to bring the workshops to the state. Jack Shu has more than 30 years experience working in organizations that manage natural resources and provide outdoor educational programs. He has worked as a naturalist, park superintendent and diversity trainer. Currently he oversees the Office of Community Involvement in California State Parks. Sandi Funke has ten years experience in environmental education as a naturalist, science teacher, curriculum writer and evaluator. She currently serves as the project manager for the Golden State Environmental Education Consortium.
