Audubon Center at Debs Park, Los Angeles; Brook Langston; Expiration 4/27/2008. Since 1998, Audubon has been working with the City of Los Angeles and the communities of Northeast and East Los Angeles to develop the the Audubon Center at Debs Park. The result: a cutting-edge environmental education center and ecological monitoring program within the nearly 300-acre city park, located on the border of Highland Park and Montecito Heights between Dodger Stadium and South Pasadena. Over half the park is covered in walnut-oak woodland, grassland, and coastal sage scrub, a remnant of the native habitats that once rimmed the Los Angeles Basin. Over 25,000 kids, mostly Latino, live within 2 miles of the Audubon Center at Debs Park, with working parents who are simply too busy for trips to the nearby mountains or the beach. Aside from the occasional field trip in grade school, these kids are being left out environmental education opportunities children elsewhere take for granted. In fact, the grandparents and great-grandparents in the community, often from rural backgrounds, possess a far broader knowledge of the natural world than do the younger generations. With family-oriented educational programming, the Audubon Center at Debs Park will address these disparities and will serve as a model for urban nature centers across the country. |

It is about finding the magical worlds that have almost been forgotten and tapping into a child's imagination and sense of wonder. For others, this may be their first extended time away from family. The
sense of independence gained is invaluable. Sixth-grade camp has an incredible
impact on most classroom groups. You will witness social and motivational
effects. Students become more appreciative of their own potential, each

The Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens, Goleta; Linda Halley; Expiration 11/20/07. The Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens is a California non-profit organization that was established in 1997 to preserve and operate Fairview Gardens, the historic farm where our products are grown. Founded in 1895, Fairview Gardens is considered by some to be the oldest organic farm in southern California, and is now preserved in perpetuity through an agricultural conservation easement. As a highly visible agricultural parcel in a now dense suburban environment, Fairview Gardens plays a unique role in the community, providing its neighbors with food, educational and cultural events, open space and a connection to the land. The farm also demonstrates the economic viability of small farm operations, and the potential of small, regional farms to feed their communities. On our twelve and a half acres, we produce a hundred different fruits and vegetables, feed approximately five hundred families, and employ over twenty people. We also nourish the community in less tangible ways, through cooking and gardening classes, workshops, farm festivals, tours, lectures, apprenticeships, and outreach and consultation to schools and communities nationwide. The Center's mission is to preserve the agricultural heritage of this 100-year-old farm; provide the local community with fresh, chemical-free fruits and vegetables; demonstrate the economic viability of sustainable agricultural methods for small farm operations; research and interpret the connections between food, land, and community well being; and nurture the human spirit through educational programs and public outreach both on and off the farm. |
Dunn School, Los Olivos; Randy Judycki; Expiration 3/4/08. Mission Statement: The Dunn School Outdoor Education Program is integral to the school's philosophic commitment to the education of the whole person The program fosters greater self awareness through challenges and experiences in the outdoors and specifically concerns itself with the following goals: 1) Challenge students to raise their level of confidence, self-esteem, and trust in others through physical and social growth components. 2) Develop mutual support within a group through sequential activities that transfer to the students academic, social and athletic challenges. 3) To increase appreciation of one's physical and social self. 4) Widen their appreciation for the natural environment and the trial one endures each time they are faced with its diversity. The Outdoor Program Educational Philosophy The Outdoor Education Program takes the students' learning beyond the walls of the classroom. As stated in the Mission Statement, "it fosters the growth of the whole student." The program provides students the opportunity to work in the realms of feelings and beliefs, as well as those of intellect and skill. Through the process of learning in the wilderness, we believe students
discover an awareness of self worth and confidence by participating in
activities that challenge old norms and ideas. To reach the goals of
the program, the student must invest him or herself in the process by
following the ideas set below: - Emphasis should be on the learning process
and not on the end product or destination. - One must be willing to inquire,
discover, and have fun. - The focus is on inter-group learning and not
on isolated competitive approaches. - Instructors are seen as facilitators
first and teachers second. - Individuals have unique learning styles
and need concrete, successful experiences, which assist them in surpassing
their physical and mental limitations. - Students will realize that they
have more in them than they think. |
