Full Time Instructor

Program Description: YMCA Camp Surf is located on the Silver Strand State Beach about 20 minutes south of San Diego. Our facility houses 200 campers in rustic cabins and up to 300 participants which includes beach camping on the weekends. We offer traditional camp programs with an emphasis on aquatic activities and the coastal marine environment. Some instructors also train to be ocean lifeguards.

Job Description:

Teach outdoor education, leadership development, and recreational activities for both children and adults during spring and fall season. During the summer be a part of our summer resident camp program. Assume responsibility for the well-being and safety of all participants and assist in program equipment management and general upkeep as needed. Opportunity to certify as ocean lifeguard.

• Complete training, plan, develop, and implement field science classes for 1st-12th grade students in line with the California State Science Frameworks
  
• Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching in leadership development activities such as team building, trust initiatives, and developmental classes.
  
• Complete training and demonstrate proficiency through practical teaching of recreation activities such as archery, saltwater fishing, volleyball, surfing, body boarding, snorkeling, kayaking, and other skills common to a beach setting.
  
• Assist in training and mentoring of part-time seasonal staff.
  
• Create or improve at least one new program area, display, or activity each season.
  
• Complete training and demonstrate the ability to lead evening camp activities such as story telling, campfire skits, games, songs, and night hikes.
  
• Assist in development of interpretive displays and projects to complement instructional activities.
  
• Assist participants during meals, study group activity periods, and transitional periods.
  
• Understand the need for, and demonstrate willingness to be an exemplary role model at all times in camp, on field trips, and at other times when representing YMCA Camp Surf.
  
• Demonstrate a strong sense of investment in camp, including the cleanliness of facilities, care of equipment and supplies, and stewardship of the natural environment.
  
• Follow the specific directives of the Coordinator and Program Directors.

Qualifications: Background in outdoor education and/or recreational activities. A degree, certificate program, or experience in child development, education, recreation, marine studies or a related field is preferred. Must be able to walk groups from beach to estuary and from the center of camp to the jetty within the normal 90-minute activity time period. Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to respond swiftly in an emergency situation. CPR and First Aid certification within 30 days of employment. LGT and ocean experience preferred.
