
Part-Time Field Educator, Watershed Education Program
Program Description: Save The Bay has been working since 1961 to celebrate, protect, and restore the San Francisco Bay. Through our Watershed Education Program, Save The Bay offers middle and high school students and other Bay Area residents environmental education experiences on the Bay and in schools. This program connects over 10,000 people with the Bay each year through three unique opportunities:
- Canoes In Sloughs: an on-the-water canoe field trip program for youth and schools
- Discover The Bay: outings program for families and adults
- Community-based Restoration: a habitat restoration and stewardship program for schools, corporate and community groups and other Bay Area residents
These programs provide participants with an awareness of the Bay, a connection between their daily lives and local wetlands, and a sense of responsibility for the Bay through active stewardship. For more information about Save The Bay, please visit our website at www.saveSFbay.org
Job Description: Save The Bay’s Watershed Education Program seeks energetic part-time Field Educators to lead on-the-water Canoes In Sloughs and Discover The Bay programs for middle and high school students, community and corporate groups and other Bay Area residents. Educators will co-lead educational programming related to wetlands, watersheds and the San Francisco Bay while maintaining a fun and safe environment for groups on canoes. Other responsibilities are listed below. This is a great position for someone who is passionate about education, enjoys educating youth and adults outdoors.
This position starts immediately and runs part-time, averaging 3 days per week with programs hosted Monday-Saturday. Typical hours are 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Driving is a requirement of this job, as we strive to connect participants with the Bay at parks and preserves closest to their communities.
Responsibilities:
- Lead one-day Canoes In Sloughs and Discover The Bay field programs for middle and high school students, teachers and the general public
- Develop meaningful environmental education activities and hands-on curriculum for field trips
- Ensure rigorous safety standards during programming
- Manage and maintain trailers, trucks, canoes, tools and equipment, and safety and paddling gear as directed by Education Specialists
- Conduct periodic school-based educational programs, such as classroom visits
- Perform administrative work associated with field programming
- Team teach and work closely with a team of Field Educators
- Assist with teacher workshops
- Conduct periodic support of our restoration programs
- Drive a truck towing a canoe trailer on Bay Area freeways
- Maintain high standards of performance in a professional work environment

Qualifications: Required:
- College degree in Education, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Marine Biology or equivalent experience
- At least one year teaching experience, preferably with experience in outdoor environmental education programs
- Energy and enthusiasm for working with middle and high school students, teachers and adults while managing their safety, and teaching them about the Bay
- Experience working with diverse student populations and people with differing ability levels
- Physical ability to lift and carry heavy objects (65 lb. canoes and other equipment), perform rescues of people from the water, and perform canoe-over-canoe rescues
- Strong swimming skills
- Clean driving record and strong commitment to safety and maintenance of truck, trailer and all other equipment
- Initiative, creativity, and collaborative work style; attention to detail
- You must have your own vehicle or unrestricted access to a vehicle
- Able and willing to work occasional Saturdays
- Wilderness First Aid and CPR certified (If not certified, training courses are offered frequently and partially subsidized by Save The Bay.)
Preferred:
- Knowledge of environmental issues impacting San Francisco Bay
- Experience with Bay Area schools
- Boating and paddling experience strongly preferred
- Fluency in Spanish a plus
