OBJECTIVE:
Responsible for health and well being of horses under Return to Freedom’s
care
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Outdoors and normal barn conditions
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Oversee health and well being of all horses.
• Maintain horse records, and keep track of notes/changes in records
• Maintain & order supplies – grooming, feed, supplements, etc.
• Oversee barn management - maintain vet room, tack room, feed room, make
sure they are kept clean and organized
• Maintain standards of cleanliness, care, maintenance throughout property
• Keep track of individual horses, herds
• In charge of special feeds and supplements, administer or oversee
• Feed schedules and special feed/supplements schedules
• Make sure troughs are filled/functioning & that the pastures have
mineral blocks
• Learn to work hydraulic chute with ranch hands
• Transport horses to the vet, as necessary
• Provide doctoring
• Oversee farrier, dental work, worming, etc.
• Handle inoculations
• Handle babies, socialize them, and provide basic training
• Jump in and help ranch hands when needed
• Oversee any volunteers that help with Equines
• Help prepare horses etc for equine programs if necessary
• Help feed / clean one day a week to give barn staff a day off
NOTE: This description incorporates the most typical duties performed. It is recognized that other related duties not specifically mentioned may also be performed. The inclusion of those duties would not alter the overall evaluation of this occupation.
Depending on skills and interest- Give tours and clinics.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Available full time, possibly live on site –( if live on- must
be willing to be home 5-6 evenings per week or coordinate so ranch is not left
empty for longer stretches of time).
• Experienced horseman/horsewoman
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
High school diploma required
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
• Strong communication skills
• Self starter, responsible, mature
• Organized, detail oriented with record-keeping
• Dedicated to caring for the horses, “whatever it takes” attitude
• Understand herd behavior and dynamics
• Experience handling non domestic horses
• Ability to solve problems/issues with wild horse
• Knowledge and appreciation for alternative/non traditional healing (homeopathy,
herbs)
• Experienced rider
• Roping skills, a plus
• Stallion handling skills, a plus
• Natural horsemanship/resistance free training, a plus
