Program Description: The Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School (LACOSS) is a one week, Monday through Friday, residential outdoor science school. This excellent educational program has been providing science enrichment experiences to fifth and sixth grade students since 1960. It is coordinated by the Los Angeles County Office of Education and is conducted as a California public school. We are a school, not a camp. Our primary focus is science education, not recreation. This year we expect to serve approximately 12,000 fifth and sixth grade students from schools and districts throughout Los Angeles County. For most students, attendance at Outdoor Science School is a very memorable highlight of their school year.

Position Description: Working closely with the site director and the outdoor science teachers, the intern will gain knowledge and understanding of the inner workings of an outdoor science school, as well as gain skills and training to become an effective outdoor science teacher. The internship is designed to provide a concrete foundation for pursuing a career in outdoor education to people with a good science background (science degree preferred), but limited teaching experience. Through observation, inservices, team teaching, personal research, and independent teaching, the intern will gain experience in areas such as curriculum and lesson design, group management, fundamental teaching techniques, and the administrative aspects of running an outdoor education program. Interns will be paired with outdoor science teachers and will assist with teaching, night programs, and student supervision.

Qualifications: The internship is designed to build a concrete foundation for those with a strong science background but with limited teaching experience. Applicants should have a degree in life sciences, environmental sciences, physical sciences, or other comparable fields -OR- be currently working toward a science degree (seniors preferred). Applicants should also have some experience working with children and the desire and ability to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens. In addition, applicants should have good personal and group communication skills, be phyically able to work in a semi-wilderness setting, and willing to work irregular hours. The ability to sing and/or play musical instruments is a plus.

Salary: $100 stipend/week
