Camp Highland

Field & Cabin Instructor

Program Description:

Camp Highland Outdoor Science School is an innovative residential grade school science program in the foothills of the San Bernadino Mountains, 50 miles from Joshua Tree National Park. Sixth grade classes from all over Southern California come and spend a week with us learning about nature, science, and each other.

This is an incredible opportunity to touch the lives of the many children who come through Camp Highland, to let them know how beautiful and fragile this earth is and the pivotal role we are playing in its future. Join a closely-knit and supportive staff team of 18 and teach a sense of community, responsibility and environmentalism in a relaxed atmosphere. We offer over 15 classes including: Archaeology, Wildlife Ecology, Macroinvertebrates, Aquatic Study, Canoeing, Climbing, Archery, High and Low Challenge Courses, Teambuilding, Orienteering and many others. Develop and research your own lesson plans, design work projects, and participate in peer evaluations. Teaching duties are rotated through field instruction and cabin instruction, giving you generous amounts of time off to re energize and pursue your own personal interests.

More important than knowing how to make responsible choice is knowing why to make the responsible choice. At Camp Highland Outdoor Science School, we help build a consciousness of community. Our instructors focus on treating one another respectfully and working together to accomplish goals. At our adventure activities, students discover how much can be accomplished with effective communication skills. Living together in our cabins, students realize the impact that their actions have on others. Every component of Camp Highland is a learning experience.

Camp Highland is nestled on 900 private acres between the San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Mountain ranges. At an elevation of 3100 feet, our property has an incredibly diverse representation of plants, trees, cactuses, and animals. We are part of Highland Springs Resort, so we have access to their swimming pool, workout room, tennis and basketball courts, and much more. Spend your free time backpacking or climbing in the mountains and nearby desert, or head to Los Angeles or the beach for some city life and culture.

What is man without beasts? If all the beasts were gone,
men would die from great loneliness of spirit,
for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to man.
All things are connected.
Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth.
