Program Description: The Conejo Valley Unified School District’s Outdoor School is a residential environmental education program for 6th grade students. The program is held at Camp Bloomfield, a 40-acre camp located 2.5 miles inland from Leo Carrillo State Beach in Malibu, Southern California. Naturalists guide students on trails in hands-on activities and lessons based on environmental topics. 6th grades students spend a school-week (Monday – Friday) learning about astronomy, botany, ecology, geology, hydrology, oceanography, and zoology. Classes are held on the trails of Camp Bloomfield in the natural chaparral, riparian woodland, and tide pool areas. This is the 34th year of the program

Job Description:
Naturalists teach one of 4 main environmental topics (botany, geology, hydrology, zoology) to a group of approximately eighteen 6th grade students, as well as supplementary classes of astronomy, ecology, and oceanography. Naturalists also assist in leading evening programs; night hikes, square dancing, and campfires. Naturalists teach 2 classes per day. Other responsibilities include supervision of students when needed, table setups, and class preparation. The Outdoor School program runs from February 11 – May 23, 2008 which includes a paid training week, with 2 weeks off during Spring Break (March 22 – March 30, 2008). The program runs Monday – Friday only. Outdoor School staff housing is on-site and meals are provided (weekdays only). With limited housing on weekends, but not during the 2-week spring break.

Qualifications: Certified in First Aid and CPR. Experience working with children and/or science background is a plus. Naturalists must be available for the entire length of a school's stay. Physically able to lead teaching hikes in a semi-wilderness setting on trails. The knowledge and skill to lead and educate, and the ability to exercise a supervisory or disciplinary relationship over minors.
