And Webmaster Assistant: Joblist Coordinator/Institutional Member Liaison
(Webmaster can be all one or two separate jobs, depending on time commitment available)
Program Description: AEOE is a volunteer-run non-profit association for environmental/outdoor educators in California. We provide resources, professional development, inspiration, and networking for educators. Read more about AEOE here: aeoe.org/about/ . The AEOE website is maintained as a service to our members, and we do everything we can to acheive our mission to "support and inspire educators in their quest for the knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to help all learners understand, appreciate and care for their environment."
Job Description: We are looking for someone in California with experience as an environmental/outdoor educator AND some computer savvy and writing/editing skills, who would be willing to take on maintaining our website. This is a volunteer position, but we do offer a small stipend to help offset expenses and time spent. Look over the website - use the site map to see and explore all the sections, and read the detailed position description to get an idea of the amount of work involved in maintaining the site. Also take a look at the board members page since you will be participating in board/council meetings as part of the job. This is a statewide position - you will be serving educators from all over California.
The Senior Webmaster is responsible for oversight of the entire website, and the Joblist Coordinator/Institutional Member Liaison can be a separate position.
The Joblist Coordinator/Institutional Member Liaison is responsible for keeping the AEOE Joblist up to date, posting new jobs, keeping in touch with and providing service to our institutional members, working closely with our Membership Coordinator to keep the institutional member page and EE Providers Directory updated with new, renewed, and expired institutional member listings. The Joblist Coordinator/Institutional Member Liaison position involves fairly regular work with daily to weekly updating and a smaller area of responsibility.
The Senior Webmaster will be directly working with the board/councils to keep publicity, forms, resources, conference information, registration, etc. posted in a timely manner, which will vary from minor updates of calendar and resources pages to a great deal more work posting conference information, newsletters, and other updates seasonally. The Senior Webmaster will also be maintaining links, site organization, and overall look and feel of the site.
Separating the two positions makes the job(s) more do-able for volunteers, and is an approximately equal amount of work, just distributed differently. Both positions involve several hours per week, potentially, and for any major upgrade of the site (such as adding e-commerce tools for conference registration and membership, getting set up for database use in the joblist, calendar, or other areas, or redesigning navigation and/or overall look and feel) it could be a full-time job (but the small volunteer stipend will remain the same). There are currently a few thousand pages in the website, including pdf files.
Job Type: Volunteer - part-time, year-round
Qualifications: Familiarity with AEOE and California OE/EE programs is very important. The website is our main public face besides the newsletters, and since it is available to the world, it is definitely seen by more people. It would be best if you are a California outdoor / environmental educator and have some experience in the field so you understand what may best serve our members, and if you have been an AEOE member for a while, attended some of our conferences, that is a real plus! You need to be a decent writer and editor for website content. Have access to the internet and email on a daily basis, and be responsive with regular communication with the board and councils. Knowledge of basic html - ability to use WYSIWYG web editing programs such as Dreamweaver, and ability to create and work with pdf files from other formats for posting online. The website is mostly basic html with tables, nothing fancy. Since many of our members are located in very rural areas with low band-width connections, it's probably best to keep graphics and such to a minimum, so don't worry if you don't have advanced web editing or graphics skills. Most importantly, willingness to volunteer time and energy to promoting outdoor and environmental education in California through the AEOE website.
The ideal candidate will be very "customer service" oriented, keeping in mind we are here to serve our members and work together with the state board and section councils to further our mission.
Salary: Volunteer position - small* monthly stipend offered (stipend is divided between Senior Webmaster and Joblist Coordinator/Institutional Member Liaison oversight - you may do either or both jobs.) *Stipend will pay a couple of bills, but not your rent - it is $100/month for each part - senior webmaster and joblist, or $200/month for both).
Deadline: As soon as you can let us know you are interested! The current webmaster is leaving at the end of 2006, and will be happy to help support you in the transition until then (an on and off after then, as available).
Available: Be ready to take on the full responsibility of the website by January 2007, if not sooner.
Procedure: Email the current webmaster at
with questions, letter of interest, resume (if applicable). Your application/letter of interest will be forwarded to the board for review.
