ASSESSMENT: How do you know what they know?

Assessment provides a way to measure student learning.  It helps us to answer the questions:

What did they learn?

How well did they learn it?

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE:

HALF-SHEET RESPONSE - Hand out half sheets of paper to students.  Have them write down what they learned today, what was most important about what they learned, and how what they learned relates to home.

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE:

MUDDIEST PART- Following an activity hand out small sheets of paper to students.  Have them write down what was most confusing about what they just did.  What is still "muddy" in their brains?

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE:

ONE SENTENCE SUMMARY - Ask students to write a one-sentence summary of an activity.  Collect and read responses.

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE:

WHAT'S THE POINT? - Divide students into pairs, have pairs discuss the point of an activity and how it relates to the daily/weekly theme.  Reconvene group and have each pair share.

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE:

CONCEPT MAP - Instruct students to draw a concept map of the things they learned today.  It's effective for them to draw in their journals, but be sure and collect journals so you can read responses.  A concept map is a drawing of the main concepts of the day, linked by lines of the points that connect them.  (example below)

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUE:

STUDENT QUIZ- Have students submit questions for an end of activity or end of day "quiz".  Give the student quiz as promised and discuss answers.  The questions the students submit will give you feedback on student focus: factual or conceptual?

MODES OF ASSESSMENT

Signaled assessment is one of 4 common modes of assessment.  Discuss with your partner how you might use signaled assessment in your teaching day.   Include strengths and limitations of signaled assessment as well as a description of it.  When you are done turn this sheet over and compare your responses to those provided.

Signaled assessment:

All students provide a signal to instructor, indicating their understanding

Examples:

"Raise your hand if you agree with the following statement..."

ÒRaise one finger if you think ___, two fingers if you think ___."

Strengths:

á         quick

á         involves all students

á         low student level of concern

Weaknesses:

á         shallow assessment

MODES OF ASSESSMENT

Choral assessment is one of 4 common modes of assessment.  Discuss with your partner how you might use choral assessment in your teaching day.   Include strengths and limitations of choral assessment as well as a description of it.  When you are done turn this sheet over and compare your responses to those provided.

Choral assessment

Students shout out, en masse, the answer to a question.

Examples:

"A pine tree has _____Ó

"The Native Americans who inhabit this place are the _____"

"LNT stands for _____"

Strengths:

á         quick

á         involves many students

á         low level of concern (students who don't know can "fake it" and learn from others)

Weaknesses:

á         shallow assessment

MODES OF ASSESSMENT

Individual assessment is one of 4 common modes of assessment.  Discuss with your partner how you might use individual assessment in your teaching day.   Include strengths and limitations of individual assessment as well as a description of it.  When you are done turn this sheet over and compare your responses to those provided.

Individual assessment

An individual student answers a question.  That studentÕs understanding is assumed to represent the entire class's understanding.

Examples:

" Rosie, summarize what we just learned about sequoias."

ÒJose, what kind of tree is this?Ó

ÒManual, review the 3 main points of what we just covered.Ó

Strengths:

á         quick

á         deeper level of assessment (can ask more complex questions)

Weaknesses:

á         high student level of concern

á         difficult to involve all students

MODES OF ASSESSMENT

Manipulative tasks and investigation assessment is one of 4 common modes of assessment.  Discuss with your partner how you might use manipulative tasks and investigation assessment in your teaching day.   Include strengths and limitations of manipulative tasks and investigation assessment as well as a description of it.  When you are done turn this sheet over and compare your responses to those provided.

Manipulative tasks and investigation

Students conduct scientific research, perform plays, create expressive artwork, etc, to show application of new knowledge and to express depth of their understanding.

Strengths:

á         deeper level of assessment

á         involves all students

á         generally more interesting to students

Weaknesses:

á         takes a long time
