Northern Fall Conference“Why We Care” |
This fall brings our annual Fall Campout in Yosemite, where new and experienced educators, alike, gather to share ideas and inspiration. Among the many rewards that come from attending a conference, there is one underlying take home message: that people who work in this field care so deeply. We care about the kids and the future they face, we care about diversity, we care about music, poems, and stories, we care about the wild animals, the plants, the water and the land, and we care about each other. Please come join fellow educators and naturalists at this year’s fall conference, as we share with each other, “Why We Care.” ~ Tami Dickinson

Legendary Yosemite Climber, Ron Kauk, subject of the recent the film, Return to Balance- A Climber’s Journey, in which Kauk "shares insights and stories of his life of climbing in Yosemite as he strives, in his own ingenuous way, to awaken us to our connection with nature and our responsibility to preserve it."
Tamarack Flat Campground. Tamarack Flat is closer to most outdoor schools than Yosemite Valley, and it is reserved exclusively for this AEOE conference!
If you are arriving after dark please drive slowly on park roads, and watch for wildlife.

More about Tamarack Flat: Tamarack Flat is in Lodgepole Pine/Red
Fir forest with granite outcroppings and boulders and Tamarack Creek, which
runs right
through the campground area.
There is a trailhead at the campground to the top of El Capitan on the Old
Big Oak
Flat
road,
which
was a stage road that entered Yosemite Valley.
It is a primitve, dry campground (pit toilets, no running water), so come prepared.

information on Tamarack Flat The campground is closed to the public in
October when we are there, and we have already reserved and paid for it, so
no need to make a reservation - camping fees are included in conference cost.
Tamarack Flat is at 6300’ so bring cool weather gear for nights and mornings, but days will probably be warm. Bring all your camping gear plus plates and utensils. Food: bring your own breakfasts (if you need more than a bagel to get going) and lunches. Bring your camera, instruments, firewood to share, binoculars, flashlight, and other natty accoutrement. Tamarack Flat is a primitive campground which means there are no flush toilets or running water (except for Tamarack Creek...maybe).
Water: please bring more than you’ll need and a water filter if you have one. Low Impact Camping: no soap or food scraps in the creek! We pack everything out. Our goal is to leave the area cleaner than we find it.
Bears: Yosemite is prime habitat for Ursus Americanus. Car break-ins are common if there is food or food odors in cars. Keep your car food free! Store ALL food, soap, toothpaste, etc. in the bear boxes. Proper food storage regulations here. Unfortunately, “A fed bear is a dead bear.” Get the current Bear Update here. For even more bear information, see Sierrawildbear.gov
Weather: Get a current forecast before you come. For best results, prepare for the worst. Bring your car chains if you have some.
Park Entrance Fee: Don't forget your Golden Eagle pass or $20 for the Park entrance fee. Carpool!
