"Rediscovering
the Joy in Teaching" October 31- November 2Message from the Southern Chair:Dear AEOE Conference Registrants: The conference will go on! However... Due to the southern California fires, and the fact that many of the attendees/presenters have been evacuated from their homes or are on the alert to do so, we expect that some registrants and presenters will not be able to attend. As a result of this, there will be plenty of informative and fun workshops presented by the folks who can attend, but not necessarily those that were originally advertised. The conference will have a more "informal" feel, so come prepared to enjoy a spontaneous weekend with fabulous folks, spend some time networking and socializing, and learn some interesting information in a beautiful location. Our thoughts are with all of you who are being affected by the fires. Wishing you safety, Southern AEOE Board Note: If you are unable to attend the conference due to the fires, please e-mail Helen de la Maza at and your registration fee will be refunded. Cabins/dorms are available if weather turns wet and you evacuated without your tent! |

Take time this fall to "Rediscover the Joy in Teaching." At this conference we will have the chance to connect with other outdoor and environmental educators and share ways to renew ourselves and rediscover the joy that is found in teaching. There will be a variety of workshops, including Introduction to Magic for Outdoor Education, Solar Energy Activities for Education, Improv Techniques to enhance your teaching, Chumash uses of Plants in the Santa Ynez Mountains, and a workshop on the EarthWatch Institute experience. Fall workshops not only enrich your teaching, but will provide new ideas to help you throughout the school year. If you'd like to present a workshop and get into the conference for free, contact Laura Vandezande at or (909) 585-4285 as soon as possible.
The site of the conference is at the beautiful Rancho Alegre Outdoor School in the Santa Ynez mountains near Santa Barbara. The school has a pond, is very close to Lake Cachuma and has oak woodland as well as chaparral ecosystems to explore.
Halloween Fun! (Friday night)
Don't worry, you won't be missing out on the
fun of Halloween on Friday night! We will have treats for all and
the Rancho Alegre staff have
a special night hike planned for the brave! If you'd rather not be
spooked, we have
plenty of fun things planned such as Astronomy with popular astronomy
professor Dean Arvidson, or simply hanging out around a campfire reconnecting
with old friends and meeting new ones.
Saturday Night Improvs & Sing-a-Long
Saturday night will be fun-filled
starting with Improv games led by the one and only Scott Edgecombe,
followed by a concert and sing-a-long with AEOE favorites Rhymin'
Reason,
then a drum-circle/ music jam all under the stars beside a campfire
at beautiful Larson Meadow.
