Insurance - Kathleen Mitchell discussed the need to find cheaper insurance,which is due in November, that discussion is tabled till the next meeting.

History - Janice Smith discussed progress on state history materials (they look great so far Janice - great job ! - K). Southern has given Janice $300 for the project. Savannah will write a check for $300 for northern's contribution.

Howard Bell - The board voted to nominate Joseph Cornell for the Howard Bell award which will be presented at this conference.

Next Meeting - Savannah volunteered to host a statewide board meeting at Green Meadows September 17-19, 99, to allow the board more time together.

Howard Bell - Kathleen asks that official procedures be followed in the future and volunteered to be on the nominating committee

Appointment of State Coordinating Secretary - Michael Coughlin was appointed to serve as state coordinating secretary.

AEOE logo - Janice Smith presented the updated AEOE logo. Loughton Smith, former s. newsletter editor, took a logo first used in the 70's. The board voted to approve it as the official logo.

Communication - Discussion on communication between boards. Advantages and disadvantages of e-mail communication discussed. Suggestions: wait a day before sending, make sure you are sending it to the right people,
understand there are limitations to this form of communication.

Posting board meeting minutes - Both section Newsletters will have an area for summaries of the board meeting minutes. It is also suggested that an area in of the Web site be made available to post the minutes of each board. This area could be one with a separate address.

Board Compensation - Dan Allison proposed that all serving board members be comped membership for the year. The board passed this motion.

Service Credit for Board Members - Dan Allison proposed 'Board members offered the opportunity to earn unlimited service credit for work done for state conferences. Board meetings count for service credit'. This motion was passed. There was a lot of discussion on this point. Before approving Dan Allison's motion, there was lots of discussion. Two other proposals were voted on, but DID NOT pass:

  1. Board members pay full conference fees. If conference makes money, the board will be reimbursed up to half.
  2. Board members compensated 50% for attending the state conference'.

Kate Mahon opened the meeting but had to leave before it was over, at that point Savannah Brown took over.

NAAEE affiliate - Donal arranged for AEOE to become the official California affiliate for NAAEE. A small group, CAEE (CA alliance for Environmental Education) had been the previous Affiliate. Benefits - NAAEE will pay for board development including travel, food, and lodging. One member is sent free to their conferences. AEOE will now have access to NAAEE publications. The board voted to become the official affiliate of NAAEE.

There was a brief discussion on sectional membership for outdoor schools on the dividing line between north and south. There is a conflict with the by-laws and current practice. Discussion tabled till Fall meeting.
